Learning How To Learn: Study Strategies for All Students

This module will equip students with positive academic strategies for learning, productivity, and mindset, in order to attain their academic objectives.

This module will require 1 hour and 15 minutes of class time, the remaining activities can be done outside of class as assignments. The instructor will give a 45-minute presentation on critical thinking and present learning strategies during this time. The remaining 30 minutes can be used throughout the semester as group activities in class at the instructor’s discretion.

Learning Objectives

The goal of this module is not to show students how they should be learning - it’s to show them how they could be learning. We present the options, and the student personalizes the strategies for themselves.

Students will be able to identify what type of learner they are through “mindset” which covers how recognizing information is different from recalling it.
Students will practice productivity through creating time-management planners, ideal workspace, daily habits, etc.
Students will identify and develop learning strategies for academic reading, note-taking, and exam preparation to use in any course.

The above objectives will satisfy the FYE Student Learning Objectives SLO 4: Students will engage in learn-by-doing activities to develop academic skills utilizing productivity, mindset, and learning strategies to use in any course or field.

Teaching Strategies

This module is intended for use before, during, and after class as homework, group class activities, and assignments. Students will read Teach Yourself How to Learn throughout the course and practice each learning strategy outside of class as homework or class assignment. The instructor will use activities that force the students to incorporate the strategies in class or in group activities as practice. This gives the student a clear understanding of how to use the learning strategy at home when working on assignments independently.

Readings

Teach Yourself How to Learn by Saundra Yancy McGuire (all CPP students have unlimited online access to the book through the CPP Library). This reading can be done outside of class.

Videos (Assignments outside of class time)

Student’s must complete the activity portion and submit their certificate as proof of completion. Student Lingo videos available to all CPP students (unlimited access 24/7).

Time Management: Strategies for Success (25-30 minutes)
Learning Strategies Every Student Should Know (20 -25 minutes)
Study Tips & Note-Taking Strategies (25-30 minutes)
Exam Preparation Tips & Test-Taking Strategies (15-20 minutes)

Lecture and Content

During class the instructor will give a PowerPoint presentation going over chapter 4 from “Teach Yourself How to Learn” by Saundra Yancy McGuire and the difference between studying and learning. The presentation should take 45 minutes.
Student’s will be assigned reading chapters 1-5 before the following week of class.
Student Lingo videos and activity portion can be assigned outside of class time.

Activities

Time Management Calculator
- Instructor should go over the time management calculator in class and give examples of good time management
For this activity: Have groups take turns teaching the class content to learn the difference between “studying” and “learning” the material. Chapter 4 (pg. 24)

Have students do activities that tests their learning, examples: incomplete outline, brain dump, teach the material to a fake audience, etc.

How to Complete This Module

Instructor should go over chapters 1-5 of Teach Yourself How to Learn by Saundra Yancy McGuire and present the PowerPoint presentation based on Chapter 4 of the book. After presenting a few strategies for students. The instructor should assign chapters 1-5 to the students. Videos and assignments can be distributed at the instructor’s discretion.
